Chimney and vacuum pump: what they have in common
- Step 1. Chimney — is part of — Steam locomotive. Smoke from the firebox leaves through the locomotive's chimney.
- Step 2. Steam locomotive — has part — Watt steam engine. A steam locomotive is driven by a steam engine.
- Step 3. Watt steam engine — evolved from — Piston pump. The first steam engines (Newcomen’s) pumped water out of mines by driving pumps.
- Step 4. Piston pump — evolved into — Vacuum pump. Guericke adapted the piston pump to pump out air.
