Greenhouse and jacquard loom: what they have in common
- Step 1. Greenhouse — has part — Window glass. It lets light in and holds heat.
- Step 2. Window glass — uses — Casting. The panes were cast in moulds.
- Step 3. Casting — is used in — Linotype. It casts a line of type in metal.
- Step 4. Linotype — evolved from — Movable type. Mechanized typesetting.
- Step 5. Movable type — is part of — Gutenberg printing press. Text is set from metal type.
- Step 6. Gutenberg printing press — works like — Jacquard loom. An analogy, not proven influence: both set type and a chain of punched cards are a replaceable pattern that a machine reproduces over and over.
