Induction hob and Babbage’s Analytical Engine: what they have in common
- Step 1. Induction hob — has part — Inductor. A coil under the panel.
- Step 2. Inductor — works like — Electromagnet. An inductor and an electromagnet are both coiled wire; current through them makes a magnetic field.
- Step 3. Electromagnet — is part of — Relay. An electromagnet switches the contacts.
- Step 4. Relay — is part of — Harvard Mark I. The Mark I was electromechanical, built from relays.
- Step 5. Harvard Mark I — was inspired by — Babbage’s Analytical Engine. Howard Aiken named Babbage’s work as the source of his idea.
