Mechanical clock and radar: what they have in common
- Step 1. Mechanical clock — evolved into — Quartz clock. Quartz clocks replaced mechanical ones: a vibrating quartz crystal took the place of the pendulum and balance.
- Step 2. Quartz clock — uses — Piezoelectric effect. The quartz resonator vibrates thanks to the piezoelectric effect.
- Step 3. Piezoelectric effect — is used in — Sonar. Langevin’s transducer is piezoelectric quartz.
- Step 4. Sonar — works like — Radar. The same echolocation principle: sound in water instead of radio waves.
