Mine hoist and mechanical clock: what they have in common
- Step 1. Mine hoist — has part — Wire rope. Mine ropes were the first use of wire rope.
- Step 2. Wire rope — evolved from — Rope. A steel counterpart of rope.
- Step 3. Rope — is part of — Chip log. On a line with knots.
- Step 4. Chip log — uses — Hourglass. The time of a speed measurement was taken with an hourglass.
- Step 5. Hourglass — works like — Water clock (clepsydra). The same principle of timing by outflow, with sand instead of water.
- Step 6. Water clock (clepsydra) — evolved into — Mechanical clock. Mechanical clocks replaced water clocks, swapping the flow of water for an escapement.
