Spray bottle and windlass: what they have in common
- Step 1. Spray bottle — has part — Piston pump. A hand pump.
- Step 2. Piston pump — evolved into — Watt steam engine. The first steam engines (Newcomen’s) pumped water out of mines by driving pumps.
- Step 3. Watt steam engine — has part — Crank. The stroke of the piston becomes rotation of a shaft (Watt first used a planetary gear).
- Step 4. Crank — is used in — Windlass. The handle of a windlass is a crank.
