Toaster and rocket: what they have in common
- Step 1. Toaster — has part — Bimetallic strip. The timer of many toasters is bimetallic.
- Step 2. Bimetallic strip — is part of — Hair dryer. Overheating protection: when hot, a bimetallic strip bends and breaks the circuit.
- Step 3. Hair dryer — has part — Impeller. An impeller on the motor shaft pushes air through the heater.
- Step 4. Impeller — is part of — Centrifugal pump. The impeller accelerates the liquid.
- Step 5. Centrifugal pump — is part of — Liquid-propellant rocket engine. Turbopumps deliver the propellant.
- Step 6. Liquid-propellant rocket engine — evolved from — Rocket. Goddard switched to liquid fuel.
