Hourglass wooden frame and CNC machine: what they have in common
- Step 1. Hourglass wooden frame — is part of — Hourglass. A protective frame.
- Step 2. Hourglass — works like — Water clock (clepsydra). The same principle of timing by outflow, with sand instead of water.
- Step 3. Water clock (clepsydra) — evolved into — Mechanical clock. Mechanical clocks replaced water clocks, swapping the flow of water for an escapement.
- Step 4. Mechanical clock — has part — Gear. A gear train counts seconds, minutes and hours.
- Step 5. Gear — is part of — Milling machine. A gear train drives the feed.
- Step 6. Milling machine — evolved into — CNC machine. The first CNC machines were milling machines (MIT, 1952).
