Ammeter
device · 1882 · Electric age
Measures electric current; it is connected in series.
Principles and materials it uses
- Electromagnetism — uses. Current in the coil creates a magnetic field, and the needle turns further the larger the current.
- Direct current — uses. In a school circuit the ammeter shows the direct current from the battery.
History: what it evolved from and what it influenced
- Galvanometer — evolved from. An ammeter is a galvanometer with a scale in amperes and a shunt that carries most of the current.
- Multimeter — evolved into. The current mode of a multimeter is the same ammeter.
Things built in a similar way
- Voltmeter — works like. They are built alike, but an ammeter goes in series with the circuit and a voltmeter in parallel.
