Voltaic pile and jacquard loom: what they have in common
- Step 1. Voltaic pile — uses — Direct current. It produces direct current.
- Step 2. Direct current — is used in — Ammeter. In a school circuit the ammeter shows the direct current from the battery.
- Step 3. Ammeter — uses — Electromagnetism. Current in the coil creates a magnetic field, and the needle turns further the larger the current.
- Step 4. Electromagnetism — is used in — Hollerith tabulator. The counters click with electromagnets.
- Step 5. Hollerith tabulator — uses — Punched card. The 1890 census data was encoded on punched cards.
- Step 6. Punched card — is used in — Jacquard loom. Each punched card sets one pass of the pattern.
