Capacitance
principle · 1745 · Early modern era
The ability of conductors to store charge; the capacitor is based on it.
Where it is used
- Microphone — is used in. In a smartphone’s MEMS microphone, the vibrations of the diaphragm change the capacitance between it and a fixed plate.
- Touch layer (capacitive) — is used in. A finger changes the capacitance between electrodes; the controller calculates the point of touch.
- Supercapacitor — is used in. The huge capacitance of a double layer.
- Capacitor — is used in. It stores charge thanks to capacitance.
- Theremin — is used in. A hand changes the capacitance of the antenna.
- Touchpad — is used in. Capacitive.
- Condenser microphone — is used in. Capacitance.
- Fingerprint scanner — is used in. A capacitive scanner.
