Carburettor
part · 1885 · Electric age
Mixes fuel with air before it enters the cylinders.
What it is made of
- Valve — has part. A throttle valve in the carburettor sets how much fuel-air mix reaches the engine.
Principles and materials it uses
- Venturi effect (Bernoulli’s principle) — uses. In the throat of the venturi the pressure drops and draws in petrol.
- Brass — is made of. A carburettor is brass and zinc alloy.
- Petrol — uses. It mixes petrol with air.
Where it is used
- Internal combustion engine — is part of. Petrol engines mixed fuel and air in a carburettor until the 1980s–90s; modern engines use fuel injection instead.
- Car — is part of. In older cars the carburettor mixed petrol with air for the engine.
History: what it evolved from and what it influenced
- Fuel injection — evolved into. Fuel injection replaced carburettors.
