Petrol and nuclear reactor: what they have in common

  1. Step 1. Petrol — is used in — Carburettor. It mixes petrol with air.
  2. Step 2. Carburettor — uses — Venturi effect (Bernoulli’s principle). In the throat of the venturi the pressure drops and draws in petrol.
  3. Step 3. Venturi effect (Bernoulli’s principle) — is used in — De Laval nozzle. The nozzle accelerates the gas.
  4. Step 4. De Laval nozzle — evolved from — Steam turbine. De Laval invented the nozzle for a steam turbine.
  5. Step 5. Steam turbine — is part of — Nuclear power plant. Steam turns the turbines — as at a thermal station.
  6. Step 6. Nuclear power plant — has part — Nuclear reactor. The reactor heats the coolant.
