Petrol and transformer: what they have in common
- Step 1. Petrol — is used in — Carburettor. It mixes petrol with air.
- Step 2. Carburettor — uses — Venturi effect (Bernoulli’s principle). In the throat of the venturi the pressure drops and draws in petrol.
- Step 3. Venturi effect (Bernoulli’s principle) — is used in — De Laval nozzle. The nozzle accelerates the gas.
- Step 4. De Laval nozzle — evolved from — Steam turbine. De Laval invented the nozzle for a steam turbine.
- Step 5. Steam turbine — is part of — Nuclear power plant. Steam turns the turbines — as at a thermal station.
- Step 6. Nuclear power plant — has part — Transformer. Transformers step up the voltage so the plant's power can travel far.
